The Importance of Reflection

In a world where there is always pressure to ‘move on’ and strive for the next big thing, looking back might seem counterintuitive, it isn’t solely about dwelling on what could have been better, it’s equally important to acknowledge your wins, the lessons you learnt and what you might want to take into 2024.
Grab a cuppa and let’s get started. Give yourself 20-30 minutes and start writing or typing. No one else is going to read it except you!
Consider the following questions:
What am I most proud of this year and why?
What challenges have I overcome this year & what have I learnt from them?
Think about what you set out to do at the beginning of this year, assess where you are and what you’ve achieved. If you’re feeling stuck in the same place, try and identify what your blockers might be. If you’re not sure, think about how you feel when you think about that goal or task.
Do you know what your strengths are? What are your key skills and / or characteristics that help you succeed? Are you using them in your current job? Do you enjoy using this strength? (Hint - you don’t always!)
Think about the areas of your career you’d like to grow or improve in. Is there a specific qualification you’d like to obtain? Are there key skills you need for that promotion or a new role? If you’re not sure, think about where you could find out or who you could ask.
Finally, think about three things you’re grateful for this year. This could be related to opportunities you’ve had, colleagues you couldn’t do without or lessons you’ve learnt. Closing the exercise with gratitude always helps me smile.
